About
this Quilt
This
quilt was made by 9th grade students at a school in Raleigh, North
Carolina.
Art
teacher Jane Dalton saw the November/December holiday season as
an opportunity to explore the world’s religions and the common
use of prayer with her students. Inspiration for a prayer quilt
came from Jane’s deep personal interest in the spiritual and
symbolic meanings of cloth across time, culture and religions.
After
researching sacred texts from around the world, students wrote personal
prayers, wishes, and dreams for the future. The fabric collage pockets
created by each student contain those prayers. Safety pins and scraps
of fabric hold prayers added by faculty and other students.
As
this site develops further, you will be able to read the prayers
held in the pockets and post your own prayer for peace too!
